“There’s no way,” Alys said as she paced the confines of the greenhouse. “We have no idea who this so-called Mother Superior of Magic is or what she’s after. That healer could be one of those damn magic hunters for all we know.”

I looked over at her. “If she was a magic hunter, why didn’t she just suck out my soul then and there?”

Alys looked flushed. Sibby and I had found her and Brock dirty dancing in front of the bonfire. If I hadn’t still been in shock, I probably would have remarked on her uncharacteristic behavior.

Sibby had stepped up.

“Grind on your own time, you two.” My youngest sister had snagged Alys by the arm and then transported us back to the cottage. Brock was out in the living room and the three of us had retreated to the greenhouse where I had done my best to explain the inexplicable.

“Maeve, we’re talking major travel here. The heat can exacerbate your MS, never mind what the stress will do to you. And the Amazon River basin is massive. It spans half a dozen countries and the whole width of the continent. If it’s a sacred protected temple it’s not like we can stop and ask for directions. How will we know where to go?”

“With this,” Sibby held out her hand. In it was a clear quartz crystal attached to a silver chain. The pendulum had belonged to our mother and worked well with maps.

Alys huffed out a breath. “It’s a bad idea. Do you even have a passport, Maeve?”

I shook my head. I’d never been out of the continental US.

“Hello, witchcraft?” Sibby held up her hands. “My mode of transportation doesn’t require us to go through customs, Alys.”

Alys rounded on her. Hand planted on one hip, the other with a finger raised in warning. “Don’t be glib about this. There are other considerations too. Supplies, vaccinations, transportation to the location. We have a business to run. Maeve has a family that will know she’s gone. And have you forgotten about the magic hunters?”

“Hey, I wasn’t the one who was getting all frisky with McNibblet in the middle of the midnight market.”

Alys blushed to her roots. “We were just dancing.”

“You were about six seconds away from orgasming in public.” Sibby lifted her chin as though daring Alys to contradict her.

“It’s the full moon,” Alys said. “And the drums. It …did things to him.”

Sibby held up her hand. “As much as I want to hear about your werewolf’s monthly cycle, we have a decision to make. So let’s vote. Do we trust this healer and go to the Amazon?”

Alys shook her head. “We still don’t know if we can trust this woman not to lead us into a trap. I vote no.”

“I vote yes,” Sibby said. “It’s worth the risk if it cures Maeve.”

They both turned to look at me.

I had always been the tie-breaker. The one who made the call when the unstoppable force met the immovable object. If I said we should do this, then they would both come with me.
